Tesla has reported a huge surge in production capacity in its second-quarter earnings report released on July 20.
Having revealed it produced over 1.1 million cars in the last 12 months in early July despite the production and supply chain challenges it faced with one of its Gigafactories factories, it has now also revealed a two million car milestone at Fremont and global capacity of two million EVs a year.
“Q2 was a unique quarter for Tesla due to a prolonged shutdown of our Shanghai factory,” said Tesla boss Elon Musk at the company’s earnings call.
“But in spite of all these challenges, that was one of the strongest quarters in our history. Most importantly, in June, we achieved production records in both Fremont and Shanghai. And as a result, we have the potential for a record breaking second half of the year.”
Musk emphasised the extreme difficulties of the past few years, going so far as to this as “supply chain hell for several years.”
Production statements from the company’s latest shareholder deck reveal global capacity is now estimated at 2,000,000 cars a year, up from 1,000,000 in the company’s Q2 2021 report.

Tesla has produced almost three million EVs in total
The news coincides with Tesla also producing its two millionth vehicle earlier this month from its Fremont factory, and almost three million worldwide.

Breaking the data down a bit further, it shows that Tesla produced 563,987 cars so far in 2022. In the second quarter, 258,580 EVs were produced by the world’s largest EV manufacturer, despite its main export plant Shanghai running on reduced production capacity for part of the last 3 months.
Record production in June indicates good news for thousands of Australian customers
After having to close down the Shanghai plant that supplies Teslas into Australia, thousands of local order holders were told that their deliveries would be pushed into the second half of 2022.
The new report from Tesla indicates that this will change as the Shanghai plant has now received a production upgrade:
“While the Shanghai factory was shut down fully and then partially for the majority of Q2, we ended the quarter with a record monthly production level. Recent equipment upgrades will enable us to continue to increase our production rate further.”
This is also confirmed by Australian order holders who received an update in their Tesla accounts late in June. The update showed that they had been allocated a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), indicating that their EV had been produced at the Shanghai plant.
Most of these orders on the Tesla Model 3 were placed back in December 2021 and are expected to arrive in Australia in Q3 2022. Some were also the recently launched Tesla Model Y which had been a very popular EV in terms of its interest so far.
Based on these updates, the second half of 2022 is going to be the best half in terms of Tesla deliveries into Australia which is great news for thousands of first EV owners. It will also help ease the pressure on the high prices in the second-hand EV market that I regularly provide updates on.
