As people in Sparta continue to clean up after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake rocked parts of North Carolina, the damage to some buildings throughout the town is significant. The owner of a building that houses several companies in Sparta said the damage inside is extensive, and with no earthquake insurance, she’s trying to figure out what’s next. “Complete devastation we were speechless yesterday. We woke up yesterday morning with the huge shakes and just trying to hang on for dear life,” said Katherine Shore, who owns the building.Shore said it houses a few different companies. Inside, you can only walk a few feet before hearing the crunch of the glass from damaged lights that were knocked down. “Shock, just absolute shock — and we were in awe of the damage and how much had been done,” Shore said. The earthquake could also be felt in other states. “It’s more, I think, than people away from here realize. You know, it really was a big hit,” Shore said. The quake also knocked out power to Shore’s building. The damage assessment continues and the cleanup begins. “Lots and lots of blood sweat and tears I’m sure to come,” Shore said. The insurance commissioner said if people have damage and do not have the correct insurance coverage, as of now, they are going to have to pay out of pocket, and that it is too early to tell if any type of relief could come from the state. For more information, you can click here.

We woke up yesterday morning with the huge shakes and just trying to hang on for dear life,” said Katherine Shore, who owns the building.

Shore said it houses a few different companies.
