Sand distribution application launched in Udupi | Mangaluru News

Udupi: The Udupi district administration on Monday launched the mobile app, Udupi E-Sand, for distribution of sand without middlemen. People here have been facing many problems as distribution took place only through permit holders. Now, it’ll be distributed only through the app which gives information about sand available at the nearest place.
Ramji Nayak, senior geologist, said, “At present, there is a stockpile of 2,200 tonnes of sand at Hiriyadka Ground. There is a weighbridge at centres where the vehicle is weighed before and after being filled with sand. This does not allow more sand to be distributed. The place is managed by the Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Corporation with staff and five CCTV cameras. The connected routes have checkposts. The sand removed from Baje Dam is dumped here.”
A tender was called by the Udupi Municipal Council for removal of silt from Baje Dam. Accordingly, an organisation from Mangaluru carried out dredging work in two phases from Baje Dam to Morne Bridge, and 2,250 tonnes of sand were removed. In the CRZ range at Udupi taluk, a tender has been called to clear eight sand bars in Udyavar, Pappanashini, Swarna and Seethanadi rivers for clearance of 7.9 lakh tonnes of sand. However, there is opposition from the public and fishermen at Pappanashini river. A resurvey will be conducted. Four sand bars with 1.5 lakh tonnes of sand have been cleared already.
Udupi deputy commissioner Jagadeesha said: “In Karkala taluk, vented dam has been identified by the gram panchayat, minor irrigation department and mines department and in Kundapur and Byndoor taluk, 30 sand bars have been identified in 2018-19, of which seven have been used by Public Works Department for Varahi Project, National Highways Department and Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Corporation works. Of the remaining 23 bars, two were cleared with 150 loads of sand per day for public use and rest 21 bars are pending due to technical issues.”
Price fixed
The sand rate is fixed by the district sand committee — 1 tonne will be charged Rs 550 including loading.
A large truck of 10 tonnes will cost Rs 3,000 within a limit of 20 km, after which for every kilometre, Rs 50 additional charge will be levied.
For medium size vehicles transport cost Rs 2,000 upto 20 km then every km cost Rs 40 per kilometres. For small vehicles, Rs 1500 for sand with 20km and Rs 35 per km thereafter has been fixed.
