A major announcement was made on Tuesday (Dec.17).
Many local dignitaries were on hand as Cando Rail Services announced that they have started construction of the Cando Sturgeon Terminal.
Phase 1 of the terminal, which is located in Sturgeon County, will provide additional rail capacity for the heartland and utilize a loop-track system to enable storage of up to 1900 rail cars.
“This terminal will allow us to expand our nation-wide logistics planning network, thereby enabling greater movement of Canada’s resources in a key industrial hub of the country,” said Brian Cornick, the president and CEO of Cando Rail Services. “As a private company, we made a decision not to share the dollars of investment.”
Cornick estimated the new terminal will create only about a dozen full-time jobs when complete.
The new terminal will offer services for rail car staging and storage, including unit-train storage capability, for short or long-term, loaded or empty rail cars. Additional value-added services include rail car switching, air testing, rail car repair and cleaning, transloading, material handling, inventory management, car stenciling, placard replacement and graffiti touch-ups.
“The increased rail car staging, storage and value-added services by Cando Rail Services will complement the world-class logistics infrastructure that already exists in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, further increasing the region’s competitive advantage for value-add energy processing,” Mark Plamondon, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association’s executive director commented.
Construction is expected to be completed in late 2020.
