THE LAW GOES INTO EFFECT TOMORROW, DECREASE THE NUMBER OF DAYS IT HAS TO TERMINATE A CONTRACT WITH A WHOLESALER 180 TO 45 DAYS. >> IT SHIPS POWER AWAY FROM THE DISTRIBUTORS AND WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH OUR WHOLESALER, THERE ARE A LOT OF BREWERIES THAT GET TRAPPED IN THESE CONTRACTS THEY CANNOT GET OUT OF. THEO: DISABILITY AND LONG-TERM INSURERS WILL NO LONGER BE ALLOWED TO HIKE PREMIUMS, COUNCIL POLICIES, OR REJECT SOMEONE FROM COVERAGE BASED ON THEIR STATUS AS AN ORGAN DONOR. Jan. 1, 2020, is a new year and a new decade, which means new resolutions and, yes, new laws.

A new year is all about revitalization. Out with the old and in with new beginnings.

For beer brewers, the start of the new year means more freedom.

The Beer Franchise Law goes into effect Wednesday, decreasing the number of days a brewery has to show notice to terminate a contract with a wholesaler from 180 to 45 days.

“I think it’s good. It helps to shift some of the power away from the distributors towards us, the producers,” said Kevin Blodger, co-founder of Union Brewing. “While we are very satisfied with our wholesaler and have no plans to change anything, a lot of breweries get trapped into those contracts and can’t get out of (them).”

Changes are also coming to life, disability and long-term insurers. They will no longer be allowed to hike premiums, cancel policies or reject someone from coverage based on their status as an organ donor.

Also, on Jan. 1, law enforcement agencies are required to submit rape kits to forensic labs for testing within 30 days. Last year an advocacy group found there were more than 6,000 untested rape kits in the state.

And 2020 means more money for those who make minimum wage in Maryland. On Jan. 1, the rate starts moving up from $10.10 an hour to $15 an hour over a five-year period.

“I look forward to it as I’m going to be working minimum wage jobs for a while, so that will be a step in the right direction,” said Jack Lubin, who welcomes the mandated minimum wage hike.
