A change in format is coming to the Swift Current Salvation Army Food Bank.
Instead of handing out pre-packed hampers of food for their users, the organization will soon be letting its users have more freedom of choice in what they can eat, as well as help with budgeting.
A shopping model is being adapted in the Swift Current food bank, allowing for those who use the extra support from the Salvation Army to choose which food items they need for themselves.
The change is being made under the leadership of the Swift Current and Maple Creek Salvation Army Captains, Ed and Charlotte Dean.
They have been using that same model for the Maple Creek Salvation Army food bank for eight years now and want to see it put to good use in Swift Current too.
“There’s less wastage, much better choice, and people are happy.”
People are given a credit limit that they can take up with items they decide to take from the food bank, something they say also could help with learning to budget for groceries.
Ed and Charlotte said that they would be looking to implement the program next week.
