ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A fund to help St. Paul businesses affected by vandalism after the death of George Floyd has not yet distributed 75% of the money it raised last year.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that the Midway Fund, a neighborhood initiative started in partnership with fans of the Minnesota United professional soccer team, still has $800,000 in funds designed to help local businesses and nonprofits. Organizers raised over $1.07 million last year and saw an uptick in giving after Floyd’s death while he was forcibly detained on a south Minneapolis street corner on May 25.
The fund has distributed $91,000 to four businesses damaged by vandalism in May, as well as given seven grants to community nonprofits ranging from $5,000 to $9,000.
Organizers said the distribution of grants has been slower than anticipated.
The Midway Fund has also disbursed $2,500 grants to businesses hurt by the pandemic. Those grants total $268,000.
