Eufaula factory laying off 309 employees

Nucor is laying off 309 employees at its American Buildings subsidiary in Eufaula.

The North Carolina-based company’s action is listed on the Alabama Commerce Department’s WARN list. The layoffs are expected to begin Sept. 11.

American Buildings Co. was acquired by Nucor Corp. in 2007 and manufactures custom engineered steel building systems.

According to the company, Nucor’s consolidated net sales decreased 23% to $4.33 billion in the second quarter of 2020, while overall shipments decreased by 24%. The COVID-19 pandemic has had “significant impact” and the company expects conditions in some markets to remain challenging in the third quarter.
