Duluth lawmaker co-authors proposal banning plastic water bottle sales

ST. PAUL, MN — A bill proposed at the Minnesota state capitol would ban water sold in plastic containers.

Rep. Jennifer Schultz, a democrat representing the Duluth area in the Minnesota House of Representatives, is listed as one of the bill’s 11 authors, all of whom are democrats.

According to the bill’s text, “bottled water” is defined as water contained in a formed or molded container that “is comprised primarily of plastic resin, is sealed, and holds one gallon or less when full.”

A manufacturer, wholesaler, or retailer that violates the law would be subject to a fine of $50 for each water bottle offered for sale, up to a maximum penalty of $500.

The bill was introduced in the House February 27 and reffered to the Commerce Committee.

If passed, the law would go into effect January 2021.

KBJR 6 reached out to Schultz for a comment on her support for the bill, and we are waiting to hear back.
