A South Carolina boat manufacturer plans to establish a new production facility for its line of premium yachts, state and company officials announced.

Sportsman Boats Manufacturing said its Phenom Yachts subsidiary would invest about $12 million in its new factory outside Charleston. The project is expected to create 149 jobs. Company officials said Phenom makes high-performance center console yachts with advanced manufacturing and materials for both offshore fishing and family activities.

Phenom President and CEO Tommy Hancock said the company wanted to create a center console unlike any other. The support of the state of South Carolina helped bring the vision to life.

Officials expect to begin operations in Summerville, South Carolina, by the beginning of next year.

South Carolina’s economic development agency authorized job development tax credits to support the project. Details of the incentives were not disclosed. Sportsman, founded in 2011, says it makes the recreational boating market’s fastest-growing line of center console and bay boats.
