Microsoft’s latest Xbox One update has caused some serious problems for some users. As a result, some people saw the eternal black screen of death. And no reboot or cold boot would solve the problem.

I am one of these affected users; A couple of nights ago, my Xbox One suddenly crashed. I am frustrated and have many questions about how this happened, but luckily my console is not permanently broken and so are you.

Disclaimer before restoring Xbox One to factory defaults

Restoring Xbox One to factory settings is currently the only known way to use the console again. However, this can be expensive: except for data uploaded to the cloud, your saved games, accounts, and settings can be reset and deleted. When I rebooted my Xbox One, I was given the option to download games and apps, but I can’t guarantee that you will get it either.

It is also not an easy task. Under normal circumstances, restoring factory settings is an easily accessible option in the Xbox One Settings menu. Unfortunately, due to this nasty bug, the console interface is not available at all, which means you will have to go through many arcs to start factory settings.

You will also need additional items to even start the process. Since the console is not in use, you must download the necessary files to a USB stick or other external drive. We recommend using at least 4GB of free space. You will also need a computer with an internet connection or at least something to download this file and transfer it to an external drive.

If you have the necessary items and don’t mind losing your save data, here’s how you can restore your Xbox One to factory settings, even if you’re stuck on a black screen of death.

How to restore Xbox One to factory settings

These additional steps are only necessary if the Xbox One configuration is not available. Otherwise, you can easily restore factory settings. Just press the Xbox button and go to Profile & System> Settings> System> Console Information> Reset Console. Now you can choose whether you want to save your data and apps or reset everything. If your Xbox One is stuck on a black screen of death, you need to take additional steps.

How to reset Xbox One to factory settings

Step one: make sure the external drive is formatted with NTFS.

1. Insert the external drive into the computer or laptop.

3. Right-click on the external drive in the Devices and Drives section. If it doesn’t appear, you can also find it in the This Computer section of File Explorer.

5. Make sure NTFS is next to File System. Otherwise, you will need to take a second step. If your drive is already formatted with NTFS, you can skip step two entirely.

Step two: Reformat the external device to NTFS. Some limitations of liability before you begin: Your external drive must be completely clean. If you reformat the device, you will lose all the data stored on it. We recommend that you download all the data stored on the external device to your computer while using an external drive for this instruction.

1. Insert the external drive into the computer or laptop.

3. Right-click on the external drive in the Devices and Drives section. If it doesn’t appear, you can also find it in the This Computer section of the file explorer.

5. For File System, select NTFS.

6. Select Start. A window will open warning you that all data on the disk will be erased. Click OK. Your external drive is now formatted for NTFS.

Step three: download the necessary files to an external drive.

1. Make sure your external drive is clean before you begin. The disc must be blank for Xbox One to successfully restore to factory settings.

2. Download this file to your computer.

3. Unzip the downloaded file and move $ SystemUpdate to an external drive. Note that there should be no other files on the disk.

4. Click Show hidden icons on the taskbar. This is an icon that shows an arrow pointing up.

5. Right-click Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media. This is an icon that looks like a USB flash drive with a check mark.

6. Remove the external drive.

Step Four: Reset Xbox One to Factory Settings

1. Disconnect any wired connectors from the console.

2. Manually turn off the power of the Xbox One, and then unplug the power cord completely to make sure it is turned off.

3. After 30 seconds, reconnect the power cord to the console.

4. Insert an external drive into one of the USB ports. Two should be on the back of the console and one should be on the left side of the console.

5. Press and hold the pairing button on the left side of the Xbox One, while holding down the eject button on the front of the console. To hold both, you will need to press the Xbox button on your console instead of holding it down.

6. Press and hold the Pair and Eject buttons for about 10-15 seconds. When you hear two beeps in a row, you can release these two buttons. If your Xbox One says something happened (it happened to me), you should be able to click Continue. There will be an option to Restore, where you will decide if you want to save games and applications or delete all data.

7. When the console finishes rebooting, it will go through the setup process as if the console had just come out of the box. Now you can remove the external drive and finish preparing the console.

While this process is a bit painful, it has helped repair the Xbox One. It is still shocking that this system update was initially applied to so many consoles, but at least there is some solution, no matter how frustrated you are about it.
