Meerut: Products and equipment “worth lakhs of rupee” gutted as a massive fire engulfed a sports’ equipment factory in Meerut’s Partapur area late on Saturday night. However, no loss of life was reported.
The reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained, but officials suspect short-circuit behind the fire.
A guard at Vinex factory first noticed the fire around 8:45pm and alerted the owner, Ashok Bhalla.
“Soon after receiving information, 13 fire tenders were pressed into action and it took them more than 12 hours to put out the fire completely. The fire-fighting operation continued till 10am on Sunday,” said Santosh Kumar Rai, chief fire officer, Meerut.
“Out of the total 13 fire tenders, one each was called from Hapur and Ghaziabad. It appears that short-circuit caused the fire, but the actual reason could only be ascertained after a probe,” added Rai.
At Vinex, sports equipment are manufactured in a two-storey premises. While the ground and the first floors gutted, the basement was saved. The loss is yet to be estimated, but it is understood that items worth lakhs of rupee were destroyed in the blaze, said sources.
