During the morning session from 9 a.m.-noon, the Essentials of Natural Building instructor, Jamie Manza, will guide you in how to use natural materials like clay paints, cob, straw, and stone in natural building for applications around your home (fee is $45). The afternoon session on Rainwater Catchment runs from 1:30-4 p.m. and will be led by Frank Dragone. A 55-gallon drum will be provided to each participant so you can build your own water collection system (fee is $65). CDC Guidelines will be followed and total participants will be limited to 15 to provide for safe social distancing of 6-feet apart and masks will be required. Nature Journaling: 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 9, Mamakating Environmental Center, 762 South Rd., Wurtsboro. Join James Van Gelder at Mamakating Environmental Education & Interpretive Center as you learn the beauty and function of nature journaling. James is an artist and naturalist from Warwick, who has been keeping a journal regularly since 2006. He is currently active with the Orange County Audubon leading field trips and doing birding presentations. An illustrated Nature Journal is a combination of art, nature and science. It combines writing with images as a means of recording observations and stimulating inquiry. This workshop will introduce participants to this unique way to experience the natural world. Geared for all levels of ability- from novice to artist, we’ll use illustration as a tool for exploration- all that is needed is interest. Examples of exercises include compare and contrast, and design a field guide entry. Students will be exposed to the materials and techniques especially useful for journaling, as well as books and other references. Paper, waterbrush and pen can be supplied for an additional materials fee of $10 ($20 if materials are needed) or students can bring their own. Space is limited. Gardiner Library Teen Online Literary Magazine Meeting: 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9, via Zoom. Middle and high school students who enjoy writing poetry, short stories and graphic novels are invited to join in on the fun. Page Turners Virtual Children’s Program: Aug. 10, entitled “Imagine Your Underwater Story.” Kids at home get wet and wild with this underwater comedy show featuring everyone’s favorite small but mighty superheroes, Melvin the Mantis Shrimp and Agatha the Axiotl. Kids at home will learn tons of weird watery fun facts when they play our trivia game show, “Get Soaked.” And everyone can cool off with our sandpaper craft, paper towel tube rainsticks, and bubble art. Older kids will love Hydro-Dipping as they create one-of-a-kind designs in this creative craze that’s sweeping Youtube. “Working in the Borscht Belt: Tales From the Dining Room” Virtual Program: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 13, E.B. Crawford Public Library, 479 Broadway, Monticello. Panelists will discuss their experiences working in the dining rooms of several Catskills hotels in their hey day. We will hear their personal stories about working and playing in “the mountains” during 60’s and 70’s. Hear what it was like to work seven days a week serving all 21 meals to stations of from 24 to 40 guests, with no days or meals off. Accomplised Newburgh NASA Ambassador Teacher to Speakbassador Brings NASA to the Claassader: 7:30-9:15 p.m. Aug. 18, Aleen Toback will talk about her role in having students gather and interpret research for NASA and other scientific organizations.
