Two US carriers started the Android 11 software update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra smartphones – AT&T and T-Mobile. Carrier customer devices may have received the update to their device before unlocked device customers. Android 11 for the Note 20 family also includes the update to the One UI 3.0.
This update to the flagship Samsung Galaxy phones is happening just a couple of weeks after customers of the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra started receiving their update to the software in early December – although at the time of writing, T-Mobile has not yet resumed the rollout of the software to these devices.
Android 11 has many improvements and new features compared with Android 10, including notification and privacy refinements. Google made people and communication important themes for Android 11, baking in support for bubble conversations. One new feature that caught my eye is how when listening to music via Bluetooth headphones, putting your device into flight mode will no longer disable the Bluetooth radio – a small but wonderful feature for frequent travelers. Samsung’s release notes explain how they have optimized the One UI for improved memory management, performance, and battery life.
We’ve also seen that Samsung’s unlocked devices are now starting to receive the update – kudos to AT&T and T-Mobile for beating Samsung here. Meanwhile, if you have a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra on either the AT&T or T-Mobile carriers, but haven’t yet received the software update notification, hang tight! The update is rolled out in stages to customers and yours will be arriving any day now. Just be sure you have at least 2GB of free internal storage space and be prepared to grab that charger for the update.
Meanwhile, Samsung is scheduled to release the same update to Android 11 to the Galaxy S20 FE, Z Fold 2, Z Flip, and Galaxy S10, Note 10 families in January 2021. With the holiday season upon us, it seems unlikely that these devices will receive the update early – but it is possible the update will arrive in the last few days of 2020.
