Tripura farmers cheer as paddy procurement begins

A Correspondent

Agartala: The Food and Civil Supplies department has initiated the procurement of paddy from Monday in different places of Tripura bringing joy to the farmers. Food Minister Manoj Kanti Deb visited some of the procurement centers and talked to the farmers to know if there is any problem in the process.

This time, the government has fixed the lower and upper limit of paddy to be procured from one farmer. In Julaibari area of South Tripura district, the farmers met the minister and requested to withdraw the upper limit as many of them has produced more than the limit. The minister talked to them but did not give any assurance.

Last year, the farmers had to face many problems due to huge rush in the procurement centers but this year, the problem has eased due to some steps taken by the department. The department has notified earlier to gao sabhas to deposit paddy on a particular day and accordingly procurement is going on and the farmers need not to wait in line.

Ajoy Debbarma, Superintendent of Agriculture, Satchan Agricultural sub-division said this year the farmers’ harvested good paddy. All of them are trying to deposit the product barring their annual domestic requirement.

It may be recalled that last year, the State procured 10,000 MT of paddy from the farmers and this year the target is 30,000 MT.
