Tesla is one step closer to building a $1.1 billion car factory in Texas.

According to CNBC, Travis County approved at least $14.7 million in tax breaks for the leading electric carmaker to build what could be its largest factory in America, near the Austin airport.

Four days earlier, on July 10, the company was approved for $46.4 million in property tax breaks from the local school district, which puts the number north of $60 million in incentives.

The site of Tesla’s next Gigafactory is likely the Austin Green development, where the electric car reportedly closed on a $5 million plot of land. However, according to CNBC’s report, the company has yet to purchase the real estate.

On top of the plot, the company would build an estimated four-to-five-million square-foot manufacturing facility to produce Tesla’s electric Cybertruck as well as the Model Y SUV.

According to the Austin Business Journal, the plant would employ 5,000 workers, primarily in low-skilled positions, with an average salary of $47,147.

According to CNBC, company critics have mentioned concerns over Tesla’s efforts to stifle worker unionization, pay a livable wage, and guarantee worker safety.

If anything, adding Tesla’s eccentric owner, Elon Musk, to the mix in Texas will help “Keep Austin Weird.”
