Tasmanian Government rebuffs two recommendations from Royal Commission’s natural disasters inquiry | The Advocate

news, local-news,

The state government has refused to accept a recommendation from a Royal Commission inquiry for it to assume responsibility for local government emergency management activity. The government on Wednesday released its response to the inquiry into national natural disaster arrangements. Acting-Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the government supported or supported in-principle all but two of the Royal Commission’s recommendations. IN OTHER NEWS: It rejected a recommendation that the Australian Government be able to take action without a state or territory request for assistance during a natural disaster and assume responsibility for local government emergency management activity. In its response, the state government said it supported arrangements for the federal government to declare a natural disaster and support states, but not for it to have the power to take actions without agreement. The government reasoned responsibility for emergency management functions was appropriately performed by local government. It supported in-principle a recommendation that state and territory governments review their arrangements for sharing resources with councils during natural disasters. Acting-Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the government had started its work in responding to the Royal Commission’s recommendations. “While Tasmania did not experience the devastation seen in some mainland states last summer we know that Tasmania is one of the most bushfire prone areas in the world,” he said.
