CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday launched distribution of Pongal gift hampers, a financial support of Rs 1,000 each and free dhotis and saris to family cardholders in the state.
The gift hamper comprises one kg of raw rice, one kg of sugar, a two-foot-long sugarcane, a pack of cashew nuts and kismis (20 gram each) and five gram of cardamom.
The chief minister distributed the gift hampers, money and dhotis and saris to 16 families at an event in the Secretariat as a token gesture. “The state government sanctioned Rs 2,363.13 crore for the gift hamper and cash support,” said an official release.
The free dhoti and sari scheme launched by former chief minister M G Ramachandran in 1983 is aimed at benefiting weavers and the economically weaker sections. “The scheme to distribute 1.67 crore dhoti and sari would cost Rs 484.25 crore to the state,” the release said.
