Taiwan IC design houses upbeat about automotive ICs in 2023

With cars getting more and larger on-board displays, Taiwan-based IC design houses are generally optimistic about demand for display driver ICs (DDI), touch and display driver integration (TDDI) and other automotive ICs in 2023, according to industry sources.

Automotive central information displays and dashboards are being developed with larger screens and integration of more functions in a single display, and many automakers are considering replacing buttons with touch functions, the sources said. Besides, displays are likely to be added to side doors and rear seats of cars and even rear mirrors along with development of smart cockpits, the sources noted.

In addition to existing DDI, TDDI chips and T-Con (timing controller) ICs, integrating other types of ICs such as SoCs, sensors and power management ICs is a likely trend, the sources indicated, adding even if new car sales do not increase, demand for automotive ICs will definitely grow.

Automakers or their supply chain makers have robust demand for highly integrated IC solutions which can save space, reduce weight and cost, and facilitate component-material management, the sources noted, adding DDI and TDDI chip design houses with other IC product lines are expected to have an advantage in competing for orders.

Among Taiwan-based IC design houses, Hiamx Technologies has a global market share of about 40% for car-use DDI at present, while Novatek Microelectronics, Raydium Semiconductor, Sitronix Technology and FocalTech Systems have begun to ship car-use DDI.
