THE owner of an Italian deli in Swindon’s town centre has retired after a 35-year career in the industry.
Paolo Cianci has managed DaPaolo Delicatessen and Cafe for almost a decade, serving customers coffees, wines, Italian ingredients, and sweet treats.
He moved into the store’s Commercial Road home in 2014 after working in a New York City wine shop until 2004 and setting up a wholesaler in Stratton in 2010.
The wine enthusiast spent this summer preparing to step away from the shop and ensure it will be in safe hands for the foreseeable future.
Fear not – the business is staying open but, as of October 3, has now been sold to a new owner, Sandro Melis.
Paolo bid an emotional farewell in a letter to his loyal customers who have seen him through what he called ‘The Capuccino Years’.
He said: “It’s been a long journey from starting out as a wholesaler Vino Italiano Ltd in 2010 Stratton to gradually evolving into an Italian deli.
“I have enjoyed my years with the delicatessen immensely and have had great satisfaction in taking on the challenges given to me.
“I have learned many things, made many friends, and have many memories that will stay with me forever.
“Thank you to all our friends who are always super available, to our customers who are always ready to run, to our neighbors, to our loyal customers who did support us at any time and, even to those who always have been naughty, my thanks go to you the same because I love you the same.”
He will still work an occasional Saturday shift at the deli from 10am to 2pm as well as continue to host wine-and-dine events privately or at local restaurants.
Paolo added: “There is no modification of the management and policies of the store.
“I assure you that I am going to sustain the repute and standing that I have managed to build for over nine years, by assuring you that the supreme quality of products and top-notch services will remain the same.
“Our valued clients have trusted us from the very beginning and in all the odds, for which we are very thankful and grateful.
“I wish the best of luck to the new owner Sandro. I hope you will continue to support his business too.
“Arrivederci, and thank you!”
