Disaster assistance will be provided to residents and councils in the Northern Territory impacted by tropical cyclone Tiffany last month.
The local government areas of East Arnhem, Katherine, Roper Gulf, Victoria Daly and West Daly are eligible for assistance through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
Emergency Management and National Recovery Minister Bridget McKenzie said widespread rainfall from Tiffany led to major flooding and road damage, while severe winds uprooted trees and wreaked havoc on a number of properties.
“The Australian and Northern Territory governments are working together to ensure those who have been impacted can access the support they need to get back on their feet as soon as possible,” Senator McKenzie said.
“Assistance is available for Northern Territory government agencies and the five impacted local councils for counter disaster operations and the restoration of essential public assets.
“This will ensure councils can cover the costs associated with clean-up activities and keeping communities safe.”
Northern Territory Emergency Services Minister Nicole Manison said cyclones and extreme weather events in the Top End were an unfortunate reality each wet season.
“Affected residents and communities can now access a range of support payments to help recover from flood, road and property damage,” she said.
