Supply chain issues delaying car repairs

QUINCY (WGEM) – Drivers looking to have their cars repaired this winter might have to contend with delays. Supply chain issues have slowed the delivery of car parts, ranging from oil filters to engines.

Erich Elligsen, the owner of Erich Elligsen Automotive Inc., said he noticed delays for many parts starting three months ago. Those delays have made it a struggle at times to repair customers’ cars.

Elligsen said engines have taken up to three to four months to come in. Smaller parts like oil filters have been delayed for weeks. Elligsen said some of the parts customers need don’t stop them from being able to drive, but they are still critical to keep cars working properly.

“He’s able to drive it but it intermittently stalls on him,” Elligsen said. “So he could be driving through an intersection, and it might just stall and he’d have to restart. Well right now we’ve been on hold for him for that computer for over two months now.”

Elligsen said they have informed customers there will be delays for certain parts that could take awhile. He said they have had to store some cars for a couple of months until a part arrives to get a car on the road.

Elligsen said they have been attempting to find parts online outside of their usual supplier; however, it’s more expensive to order them because of shipping costs.
