Supply Chain Excellence: finalists | Construction News

Construction has one of the most vast and complicated supply chains in the business, frequently a place of ingenuity and innovation, this award celebrates the initiatives that make the most of it

Action Sustainability: Supply Chain Sustainability School

The Supply Chain Sustainability School is not a single supply chain working together on a specific project, but an industry-wide collaboration to create a sustainable built environment in the UK and abroad.

Its collaborative group of major contractors, clients and suppliers have broken down traditional barriers to work together to stimulate the supply chain in embracing the sustainability agenda. The school continues to improve and build upon the solid foundation of collaboration to make it a fit-for-purpose place for all the supply chain to learn and share.

HS2: HS2 supplier management

HS2’s supplier management team has delivered high levels of engagement across the market, ensuring opportunities are communicated throughout the supply chain. These have seen more than 5,500 businesses engaged; 2,000 deliver work on HS2, of which 70 per cent are UK-based SMEs. In total, 424 apprentice starts have been registered.

HS2’s ambition is to influence change within construction. This led to the adoption of the common assessment standard for procurement, meaning companies only need to go through one set of pre-qualification questionnaires to win work on different parts of the route.

This was achieved through the extensive collaboration between HS2, its main contractors and industry bodies – all with a common goal of simplifying the procurement process for the supply chain and SMEs.

Jackson Civil Engineering, Connect Plus, DB Group, Axtell M25 Ultra Low: Carbon Concrete Pilot

In 2019, a team from Jackson, Connect Plus, DB Group and Axtell successfully piloted an ultra-low carbon concrete on the M25, which has slashed carbon emissions by 77 per cent.

The material, known as Cemfree, is not normally used in the highways sector and has the potential for reducing carbon emissions on future projects.

This supply chain’s highly collaborative approach gave each company the confidence to take on a share of the risks in order to pioneer this ultra-low carbon solution, which it says will help to confront the industry’s largest contributor to the global climate crisis.

Kier Highways – M23 J8-10 SMP

On the M23 J8-10 SMP scheme, Kier Highways endeavoured to develop a ‘One Team’ approach, collaborating closely with its supply chain. The contractor says it has been lucky to work with some great suppliers who brought interesting and innovative thinking to challenges faced, and their planning of the works or design and buildability reviews have delivered significant benefits, which have enabled it to lead Highways England smart motorway drive for efficiency.

They have delivered safety training and led safety initiatives contributing to the M23 J8-10 SMP working over 1.5 million hours incident free.

London Concrete and Cementation Skanska: London City Airport

London Concrete and Cementation Skanska successfully completed what they claim to be the biggest inshore marine concrete piling works in the country. This involved around 1,000 rotary bored piles built, using 33,500 cubic metres of ready mixed concrete supplied from London Concrete Bow.

Concrete technology and site construction processes were deployed on the watery expanse of the King George V dock, directly alongside a busy runway operating to tight timelines.

The two companies say supply chain excellence an essential. London Concrete is a key supply chain partner of Cementation Skanska and played a significant part in the work it carried out at London City Airport.

Reconomy, Balfour Beatty Living Places, Ward Recycling, HMP Foston Hall: LED Street Lighting Recycling Partnership

LED street lighting recycling partnership is a collaboration between Balfour Beatty Living Places, Reconomy, Ward Recycling and HM Prison Foston Hall.

The project brought about tangible waste management cost savings, minimised the environmental impact of a ‘difficult’ waste stream, and generated wider community benefits by providing prisoners with employment opportunities, reducing the likelihood of them reoffending upon release.

It has also established a framework that has the potential to be replicated all over the UK.
