SunLive – Update on Bay of Plenty road closures

Roads around the Bay of Plenty are facing the aftermath of a wet weekend.

Multiple slips and poor weather conditions caused many road closures and delays for motorists on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2.

UPDATE 11.44am: A Western Bay of Plenty District Council spokesperson says Omanawa Road is closed at SH29 due to a slip, in a social media post.

“The Road is going to be closed until at least tomorrow,” says the spokesperson.

“Any residents with properties before the slip can still get through from SH29. Traffic management staff will let you through.

EARLIER 10.02am: Waka Kotahi NZTA is providing updates on the latest road conditions, and other road works motorists can prepare for when travelling around the Bay of Plenty.

SH33 Paengaroa to SH30 Rotorua

“Multiple slips cleared and road reopened around 8.30pm Sunday night,” says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

“A temporary speed limit is in place as there is some residual slippery material on the road and a section of guard rail was damaged by one of the slips. Drivers please take care.”

SH35 Maraenui to Omaio – Remains closed since Saturday, October 1

“Contractors have been working hard all weekend clearing multiple slips. Two teams have returned this morning. The priority is to clear at least one lane from Te Kaha to Ōpōtiki, however there are around 11 slips on this route.”

SH2 Matatā to SH33 Paengaroa – Reopen following flooding

“Multiple slips cleared and road reopened around 8.30pm Sunday night. A temporary speed limit is in place as there is some residual slippery material on the road and a section of guard rail was damaged by one of the slips. Drivers please take care.”

SH29 Tauranga to Te Poi (Kaimai Ranges) – Scheduled works

“Tree felling will be undertaken on SH29 Lower Kaimai between Ruahihi Road and Omanawa Road. Day work will be completed on Monday October 3.

“Hours will be from 9am to 3pm. A stop/go with a temporary 30km speed limit will be in place.”

“Slip cleared last night on SH29 near Ruahihi Power Station on the Kaimai Ranges. Stop/Go in place between 11 and 12.30pm today so that contractors can safely remove trees damaged by this slip.”

State Highway 2 Pukehina – Reopen following flood

Stop/go traffic management removed at the Kaikokopu Bridge at Pukehina. Flood water has receded. Both lanes open.
