Stolen catalytic converters worth R15m recovered in Greenbushes

SAPS

Police have recovered stolen catalytic converters worth R15 million following an intelligence-driven operation in Greenbushes in Gqeberha.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the discovery was made after a truck transporting the parts was hijacked in Forest Hill on Wednesday.

She said the driver and his passenger were hijacked by two gunmen in a Quantum mini-bus and forced to drive to Harrower Road where they were ordered into the back seat of the vehicle.

Naidu said the truck was driven to an unknown location where the pallets of stolen parts were off-loaded, whereafter the driver and passenger were dropped off in Booysens Park.

Naidu said members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit received a tip-off about the “possible storage of the stolen converters” and with the support of the Anti-Gang Unit, searched business premises in Bloem Laan in Waterkloof in Greenbushes.

“A total of 10 pallets and four bags of catalytic converters were recovered. They were positively identified by the owner. It is suspected that all the stolen converters were recovered however a full audit is still to be conducted by the company,” she said.

Police are following up on further information relating to the suspects and arrests are imminent.
