Former SpaceX employees are rolling out across the startup arena, leveraging their time working for prolific tech paterfamilias Elon Musk to build their own firms aimed at innovation—and federal money.

SpaceX alumni, or ‘exxers’ as some call themselves, have undertaken ventures from asteroid mining and rockets to decarbonizing freight rail and robotic pizza-making. For many, the government contracts and sizable subcontractor deals haven’t been far behind.
