PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Sources tell Action News a suspect who was shot and wounded by officers in North Philadelphia is believed to connected to a deadly shooting at a FedEx distribution center near the city’s airport on Friday afternoon.
According to police, the suspect was shot just after 5:30 p.m. Friday at 10th and Westmoreland streets in North Philadelphia.
According to preliminary reports, the suspect fired shots at police and officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect was taken to Temple University Hospital in an unknown condition.
That person’s name has not been released. It does not appear that any police officers were injured.
According to sources, the suspect is believed to be connected to a deadly shooting at a FedEx distribution center in Tinicum Twp., Pennsylvania earlier on Friday afternoon.
Additional details about the victim in that shooting or what led up to that incident were not available.
Officials said there is no threat to the community and the shooting is being investigated as a possible workplace violence incident.
Following the shooting, a FedEx spokesperson issued a statement saying the company is shocked and cooperating with authorities.
“We are shocked and saddened by this senseless act of violence. Our heartfelt thoughts are with the victim and all those affected by this tragic event. We are fully cooperating with the investigating authorities. Please refer any additional questions at this time to local law enforcement,” the statement said.
Authorities did not say how the suspect shot by officers in North Philadelphia was connected to the FedEx shooting.
