Seven wholesalers fined for charging extra price for potato

A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion on Saturday raided the wholesale market in Mohammadpur and fined seven traders for not selling potato at the government fixed rate of Tk 30 per kilogram.

Traders in the market were charging Tk 10-12 more per kilogram than the government fixed price, said RAB executive magistrate Palash Kumar Bosu, who led the mobile court.

The court fined seven wholesalers Tk 3.30 lakh during the drive for not following the government fixed rate.

The price of potato soared in the markets of the capital and elsewhere for the last few days.

The government had initially fixed the price of potato at Tk 30 at retail, Tk 25 at wholesale and Tk 23 at cold storage level following the skyrocketing price of potato.

The decision was later reviewed on October 20 and the government fixed the price of potato at Tk 35 per kg in the retail market and Tk 30 per kg in the wholesale level.

The Department of Agriculture Marketing under the Agriculture Ministry fixed the price.

Executive magistrate Palash said that the traders were selling potato at Tk 40-42 per kg at Mohammadpur wholesale market.
