The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency’s (SEPA) monitoring team sealed on Saturday a factory in the Korangi Industrial Area for emitting toxic smoke beyond the permitted limit.
The SEPA’s Korangi district investigating team had found that the said factory was ignoring environmental obligations and the unit was emitting toxic smoke beyond the limit allowed by the relevant authorities.
As a result, the air in the area was polluted and the residents of nearby localities were affected, a statement issued by the SEPA read. Hence, the monitoring team recommended the closure of the factory under the Sindh Environmental Protection Act, 2014.
SEPA director-general Naeem Ahmed Mughal then issued orders to seal the factory and the directive was promptly implemented with the help of local police.
Under the Sindh Environmental Protection Act, 2014, any unit causing or can potentially cause irreparable damage to the environment or due to the emissions of harmful gases beyond the prescribed limit, then it is to be closed until it addresses and rectifies the issue.
