Second Harvest Needs Volunteers to Pack Senior Food Boxes

Every month Second Harvest Food Bank packs boxes of food for senior citizens.

It’s a federally funded initiative through the Department of Health.

These pallets and pallets of food are for the “senior food box program” to help low income seniors get the nutritious foods they need. Currently Second Harvest serves more than 2,400 seniors each month and they rely on a dedicated group of volunteers to pack up all those boxes.

“So the actual volunteering is very simple. It’s a lot of fun. We have this assembly line back here. Each person on the assembly line has one food item that they put in the boxes and it just comes down to the end here and we pack them and put them on pallets. So it’s fast paced – there’s fun music. It’s a pretty good volunteer event.”

Volunteers meet the third Saturday of every month to get those boxes packed. They are always looking for more help. Second Harvest serves low income seniors in a six county area including Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Wayne.
