SEOUL, Nov. 25 (Korea Bizwire)As part of measures to improve its work environment, Hanjin Transportation Co., a logistics company, will use smartwatches to track the signs of potential health problems among couriers, who are suffering from an excessive workload with the recent surge in online orders.

Hanjin said on Tuesday it had distributed hundreds of wearable devices to delivery drivers to track workers’ overall health. The smartwatches will measure in real time the wearer’s heart rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation and data on sleep patterns.

Upon spotting signs of potential health problems, alert messages will be sent to the device wearer and a team manager to notify them of the situation.

Hanjin signed a business agreement with a software company in March to establish a companywide healthcare solution for couriers.

CJ Logistics Corp., in the meantime, has decided to invest heavily in technology, accelerating the automation of logistic centers and upgrading its “WCS” (Warehouse Control System) offers integrated control of automation robots and facilities.

An open source-based WCS is the backbone system of CJ Logistics’ bold goal of establishing itself as an “innovative technology” company.

The company announced on November 14 that it will invest 2.5 trillion won (US$2.12 billion) by 2023 in a project to be transformed into a technology driven firm, by putting more emphasis on its platform-related businesses.

While Hanjin is focusing on building a management system to monitor individual workers’ health, CJ Logistics is attempting to transform into an automation-driven logistics company, sparing workers from monotonous and strenuous work down the road, away from the existing labor-intensive and experience-intensive nature of the logistics industry.
