Russian govt imposes ban on procurement of foreign data storage systems

Russian government has introduced a ban on state and municipal procurement of data storage systems from foreign suppliers, reports Cnews.ru. The ban aims to ensure the security of critical IT infrastructure.

The ban will apply for two years and also covers services that require foreign data storage systems. Lease and hire purchase of such systems is also prohibited. Replacement of local data storage equipment with foreign equipment is not allowed under the framework of existing contracts, either.

Huawei held a 23.2 percent share in the Russian data storage system market in terms of revenue in the third quarter of this year, according to a study by IDC. The Russian company Yadro followed with 21.1 percent. Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Netapp were among the market leaders.
