Province Opening Doors for Local Production of PPE in Light of Procurement Issues

Health Minister John Haggie has offered some insight into the ongoing issues being faced in securing personal protective equipment for front line workers—including those in healthcare.

Haggie told reporters today that getting access to necessary healthcare protective equipment is proving more difficult than anticipated.

“Quite frankly, there is a whole saga behind the scenes of inventory that doesn’t exist—of orders that disappear…” said Haggie. He indicates there are even situations involving deliveries that are being intercepted at the plane from jurisdictions outside Canada.

Haggie says the situation is not unique to Newfoundland and Labrador, and they’re now looking at other options to secure personal protective equipment.

They are in the process of putting measures in place with local business to re-purpose manufacturing capabilities to ensure self-sufficiency when it comes to PPE.
