Podcast | The Shifting Dynamic Between Ocean Carriers and Shippers | 2022-10-13

In the seesawing relationship between ocean shippers and carriers, who’s up right now? And who’s down?

Not too long ago, in response to severe supply chain congestion caused in part by COVID-19, ocean carriers were rejecting many shippers’ contracts outright. Today, as the logjam abates, they’re being more accommodating. But what determines who calls the shots at any given moment in this often-tumultuous relationship? On this episode, we dive into the subject with Gordon Downes, chief executive officer of NYSHEX. Downes tells us where the two parties are today, and who might be calling the shots in the months ahead. Will carriers be forced once more to take deep discounts in freight rates? Or will they be able to dictate which cargo they’ll accept, when they’ll carry it and how much they’re charge for it? And is there really any “service” in a service contract, after all? Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
