The pineapple market has been good in recent weeks. The somber feeling about 2019, however, still remains among importers. “In the end, last year, nine out of the twelve months were terrible. You can just chuck last year away,” says Frank Ocampo of Hagé International.
“Shortages are expected to continue in the first trimester of 2020. Prices should remain good too. After that, we will simply have to wait and see again. Sea freight costs have increased, along with other price hikes. Prices will, therefore, be higher than last year.”
“Hopefully, things will work out. Several farmers have said this year’s yields are at a lower level. That is because less was planted. These growers are located in Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama. The hope is that this will keep supplies stable and under control. And prices at a good level. In this way, we can afford the cost price increases. And still earn some money,” Frank concludes.
