Pentagon Looks to Expedite AI Tech Procurement via ‘Commercial Solutions Opening’ Procedure

artificial intelligence

The Pentagon’s artificial intelligence hub is using an acquisition mechanism called “commercial solutions opening” to gain access to commercial AI platforms faster, Bloomberg Government reported Thursday.

Joint AI Center officials released a CSO notice Tuesday to determine the availability of tools that could help defense agencies manage the quality of data, create applications for military access through a cloud computing environment and protect government networks from cyber threats, among other areas.

Interested vendors can submit one-page technology proposals to JAIC through Oct. 26, 2021.

According to the Defense Acquisition University, the procedure is similar to a broad agency announcement but agencies can use the method to obtain goods and services from industry that have the potential to directly address a program requirement.

BGOV found that the Pentagon spent more than $168M on procurement efforts through the CSO approach during the government’s 2020 fiscal year.
