Owner of Carmine’s Pizza Factory to donate pies for campaign on National Pizza Day

A Jersey City pizzeria owner said he’s making sure he gives back to the community on National Pizza Day.

Pizzerias across the country will be joining forces to feed the hungry and fight against food insecurity through the Pizza Across America campaign on Tuesday — National Pizza Day.

“Sure, small businesses like pizzerias are having a tough year, but too many people are suffering more than we are. I like the idea of celebrating National Pizza Day by helping others rather than squandering it by celebrating ourselves,” Carmine Testa, co-founder of the campaign, said in a statement.

Testa is also one of the owners of Carmine’s Pizza Factory, a family-ran pizzeria on 8th Street in Jersey City. In 2019, their slices placed first in the North America Caputo Cup, a premier pizza-making competition in Atlantic City, and earned second place in the World Championship of Pizza Makers’ American Division held in Naples, Italy.

Testa, a World Pizza Champions member, first kicked off Pizza Across America with his sons Michael and Nicholas — who have made TV appearances on “Rachel Ray,” “Good Morning America” and “Hell’s Kitchen” — and Slice Out Hunger, a non-profit organization.

Pizza donations will be delivered in every state of the U.S. and will be managed by Slice, a pizzeria marketing and delivery app, and Slice Out Hunger.

“We want to encourage pizzerias to donate and deliver at least 10 large pizzas to local food banks, shelters, or care centers of their choice,” Vice President of World Pizza Champions Mike Bausch said in a statement. “Our members are the most award-winning pizzerias in the country and we’re all heavily involved in our communities, so this is our way of leading by example.”

Pizzerias looking to participate can find more information at sliceouthunger.org.
