Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council have planned a series of engagement efforts, aimed at raising capabilities to manage vehicular-related risks in high-risk industries.
This was announced alongside a vehicular safety learning journey attended by Minister of State for Manpower Zaqy Mohamad on Monday.
As part of these efforts, the WSH Council (Logistics and Transport) Committee will be organising the Annual WSH Forum for Logistics & Transport Sector next year, in a move to promote best practices and technologies for forklift and warehouse safety within the industry.
Additionally, a new series of educational materials will also be introduced, for workers to learn about proper access and egress from heavy vehicle cabins.
Further, the above learning journey to Allied Container Services was also organised as a way to reinforce to employers the importance of vehicular safety in the industry by showcasing good WSH practices.
In a Facebook post about this, Minister Zaqy, who took part in the learning journey, shared that he was “heartened to see the industry taking ownership to tackle vehicular incidents,” citing these incidents as the top cause of workplace fatalities from 2013 to 2017.
He added: “Through extensive enforcement and engagement efforts, vehicular fatalities reduced from 24 in 2013 to five thus far in 2019.
“We need to continue to strengthen risk management capabilities, as safety must be our utmost priority. (I) hope to see more employers coming up innovative measures to promote vehicular safety and create a hashtag #cultureofcare at workplaces.”
