More than 200 jobs lost as Parks Hills glass factory closes

More than 200 jobs will be lost when a glass factory closes in Park Hill next month, officials said.

Piramal Glass officials told city officials on Tuesday the factory’s last day of production will be March 31, Mayor John Clark said.

Company spokesman Scott Winder said the factory’s furnaces are worn out and Piramal Glass decided to close the facility rather than replace the machines, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

The factory opened in 1970s and in 2005 employed 530 people, making it Park Hills’ largest employer. New owners slashed the payroll in half in recent years.

Clark said the factory was unionized and the jobs all paid more than $20 per hour.
