A massive fire broke out at a chemical factory in Chittagong on Friday morning.

A total of 12 firefighting units pressed into service to douse the blaze and were yet to bring it under control when the last reports came in.

The fire broke out at 10:35am in the factory of Homeland Chemical Industries near Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, where Bangladesh are playing their first Test of the two-match series against Pakistan.

The blaze soon triggered an explosion, UNB quoted locals as saying.

Newton Das, deputy assistant director of the Chittagong Fire Service, said firefighters are finding it difficult to contain the fire due to the presence of a huge amount of flammable material at the factory.

The cause of the fire could not be known immediately.

The Test match has not been affected by the inferno at the factory.
