Malda district administration on Saturday announced that land for distribution among 225-odd families, rendered homeless by river erosion, had been identified.
The victims from Kaliachak-III block had taken shelter in four primary schools and a high school after losing their homes nearly a year ago.
“Land has been identified and the list prepared. They will soon be offered patta (land deed),” said Rajarshi Mitra, the Malda DM. Sources said each family will get land parcels measuring between 720sqft and 1080sqft. “Beneficiaries can use the Banglar Awas Yojana to build homes once land is transferred,” said a source.
Administrative sources said chief minister Mamata Banerjee was very keen that the rehabilitation process be completed as early as possible.
During an administrative meeting on December 8, the chief minister had asked the Malda administration to explore ways to settle land for erosion victims.
“In less than a month the process has been almost completed by the administration,” said an official.
The Farraka Barrage Project Authority has also been involved in finding alternative land for a few families.
Jiaul Hoque, headmaster of a local primary school said that there could be no better gift than a land deed for the homeless. “There could be no better gift for them. Normal activities can also resume in schools which are presently functioning as camps.”
Around 5,000 students are enrolled in these five Malda schools.
