Maersk confirmed that the vessel ran aground at around 2300 hrs local time, and that it was not blocking the entrance to the port. “All crew are safe, there is no pollution and no sign of hull breach,” Maersk said in a statement.
The first attempt to free the vessel was unsuccessful; extra tugs have been brought in for a second attempt at high tide around midnight 2 February, said Maersk.
“Sailing from Asia, the vessel had its last stop in the port of Rotterdam before grounding outside of Bremerhaven. The vessel was on its way to discharge and consequently the cargo meant for Bremerhaven is still onboard, along with cargo destined for the Scandinavian countries,” said Maersk, adding that it will find alternative transport for cargoes waiting to load in Bremerhaven if the next refloating attempt fails.
Mumbaie Maersk is a 19,630 teu container ship; it sails under the Danish flag and was built in 2018.
