LPD finds 63 immigrants inside trailer parked behind Burlington Coat Factory

A report of a suspicious vehicle parked behind Burlington Coat Factory on San Bernardo Avenue led to the discovery of 63 people inside a trailer, authorities said.

Laredo police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at about 6:21 p.m. Thursday behind the Burlington Coat Factory in the 4500 block of San Bernardo Avenue.

Police learned that two people were seen being placed inside a trailer and the doors being closed behind them. First officers on the scene encountered an abandoned tractor-trailer that had the motor running.

Officers said they could hear voices coming from inside the trailer. Authorities also noticed that the doors were slightly open. A search of the trailer revealed 63 people inside. Laredo Fire Department crews responded to check the group for any medical conditions.

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrived to assist LPD. Agents determined that the individuals were immigrants who had crossed the border illegally and took custody of them.
