McDonald’s becomes a part of Ford’s supply chain
Automaker Ford has reached out to McDonald’s for procuring coffee chaff (coffee bean skin) to be used in the plastic headlamp housing of some of its cars. Ford wants to replace plastic and talc with chaff to help reduce their environmental impact, since plastic and talc are nonrenewable materials. This isn’t the automaker’s first attempt at using innovative materials in its production processes; the company already uses soy-based foam in its cushions and wastes from wheat, coconut, and tobacco in other car parts to meet its sustainability goals. Ikea teams up with logistics startup Optoro to improve reverse logistics processes
Swedish retailer Ikea has partnered with logistics startup Optoro to improve its returns management and reverse logistics processes. Optoro’s data analytics and machine learning algorithms help route returned and excess merchandise to optimal locations. Ikea believes that Optoro’s technology will help them reduce the waste created in the reverse supply chain, minimize carbon emissions released in return shipping, and “find the next best homes for returned items.” [Read more]

DHL to bring electric delivery vehicle to U.S.
Logistics giant DHL has announced that it will bring zero-emissions, fully-electric Work L vans to the U.S. in 2020, through its electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary StreetScooter. The company plans to test the delivery vehicles in two cities, with full-scale deployment across the U.S. by 2022-2023. DHL acquired StreetScooter in 2014 and this new development is a step toward its goal of improving air quality in urban areas and reducing its logistics-related emissions to zero by 2050. UPS to launch IoT-enabled shipment tracking service, DHL revamps its warehouse with energy saving innovations, and more supply chain management news

UPS to launch IoT-enabled shipment tracking service
The package delivery and supply chain management company is planning to launch a new service called UPS Premier that will use internet of things (IoT) sensors to track healthcare-related packages and shipments. The sensors will track packages throughout the supply chain and give priority to time-dependent and temperature-sensitive packages, which will help UPS customers enjoy increased on-time reliability. Ocean freight carriers roll out instant quoting and booking
Three of the largest ocean freight carriers (Hapag-Lloyd, CMA CGM, and Maersk) have started offering instant quoting and online booking facilities for some of their container types and lanes. This will drastically cut down the time shippers and freight forwarders need to wait to determine rates and confirm vessel space. While all shippers stand to benefit from this move, small and midsize shippers will likely gain the most as they depend on spot market rates to ship their goods. [Read more]

DHL revamps its warehouses with energy saving innovations
DHL recently completed the renovation of its Cologne-Bonn Airport DHL Express Hub and announced that it aims to reduce logistics-related emissions to net-zero by 2050. The revamped hub received inclusions such as a 1.3 million liters ice energy storage system, 3D scanners, vacuum lifters, and roof-top solar panels. The company also announced the development of its newest warehouse at Manton Wood, Worksop. [Read more]
