Commercial Plastics is closing a Lakeville facility it acquired in its April purchase of Imperial Plastics, displacing 122 employees.
Officials at the plant, which also served as headquarters of Imperial, told employees in mid-December that layoffs would begin in February, according to a filing with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
Terms were not disclosed last spring when Mundelein, Ill.-based Commercial Plastics announced its purchase of Imperial, a custom injection molder. The company did not return a request for comment on Friday.
The sale included two Lakeville facilities, including the one closing at 21320 Hamburg Av. Also included in the sale was a plant in Mora, Minn.
CEO Matt O’Connor told the Kanabec County Times at the time that Commercial Plastics was excited about the Mora plant and that the purchase of Imperial doubled both the square footage of its facilities and the number of employees.
Imperial Plastics made products for the agricultural, building materials, outdoor recreation and industrials end markets, according to Plastics News. Imperial has closed a plant in Mankato in 2017 after losing a major contract.
Commercial Plastics dates to 1940 and is a family-owned business. It has plants in Mundelein, Waverly, Minn., and Kenosha, Wis.
