Kalamazoo factory did not cap wastewater clarifier to reduce toxic gas odor, as recommended in report

KALAMAZOO, MI — A June 2020 engineering report on industrial odor near a Kalamazoo manufacturer recommended placing a cap on the clarifier that processes wastewater coming from the sprawling Graphic Packaging International factory in the city’s Northside neighborhood. But the clarifier was never capped, the company says.

The factory chose not to cap the clarifier because it did not agree with the Jones and Henry Engineers report prepared for the city of Kalamazoo, a spokesman for Graphic Packaging International told MLive this week.
