Hurricane Ian Recovery: Food, Water Distribution, Barrier Islands

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — Here are the latest updates from Sarasota County as the area recovers from Hurricane Ian.

Hidden River

A levee in the Hidden River community has possibly broken, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

This will only impact homes on the east side of the Hidden River community, which is just south of Myakka Road and west of the Myakka River, the agency said. It shouldn’t impact any other parts of the county, including Venice or North Port.

Supply Distribution

Water and food supplies for the communities most impacted by Hurricane Ian will be available through the county and its partners starting Saturday at noon at the following locations:

  • Venice Community Center, 326 Nokomis Ave., Venice
  • Hyundai of Venice, 200 Jacaranda Blvd., Venice
  • Wellfield Park, 1251 Pinebrook Road, Venice
  • San Pedro Catholic Church, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port
  • Englewood Center Plaza, 200 S. Indiana Ave., Englewood
  • Twin Lakes Park, 6700 Clark Road, Sarasota

Barrier Islands

Water and wastewater services have been restored to most of Siesta and Casey Keys, the county said.

Residents will experience lower than usual water pressure and may have some air in the lines at their homes. The county asks residents to minimize water usage until power is restored to the areas.

A boil water notice is in effect for both keys.

Sarasota County Schools

Sarasota County Schools will remain closed until further notice, according to a news release from the district.

“Over the past several days we’ve had teams assessing our schools and facilities for damage from Hurricane Ian,” the district said. “Sadly, there has been much devastation in our county and schools including massive power outages, down power lines, flooding, cellular (and) cable outages, basic water and plumbing issues, and damage to many of our school structures.”

John Ringling Causeway Bridge

The bridge is open in both directions, the city of Sarasota said. Because of internet connectivity issues, some map apps are showing it as closed.
