How crisps are made – the Walkers factory then and now

From eye tests to laser precision – the way we make our crisps has changed dramatically

It’s no secret that some of the UK’s favourite savoury snacks are made right here in Leicester.

The Walkers factory in Beaumont Leys has been pumping out crisps for decades, and the company itself was founded all the way back in 1948.

The factory in Leicester recently suffered a fire on its roof, but fire crews reported no injuries and no major damage.

While the Walkers engineers get everything back on track, we took a look through the Leicester Mercury archives to see the history of the factory – from checking everything by hand and eye, to the fine-margin machines of today.
