Gwynedd tissue factory placed on market after devastating closure

A tissue factory in Gwynedd that closed this autumn with the loss of 94 jobs has now gone on the market.

Northwood Hygiene in Penygroes, near Caernarfon, announced its decision to close the factory in May.

The company cited a “contraction in market demand” due to the Covid-19 pandemic as a key reason behind the site’s closure.

Despite efforts to save the jobs by Unite, local politicians and Welsh Government it closed in October.

The decision has had a devastating impact on the Dyffryn Nantlle community.

Now the 116,000 sq ft factory site has gone on the market with Avison Young and Williams and Goodwin estate agents.

It is being marketed as an industrial or warehouse site.

Its asking price is not given.

There are hopes a new buyer can bring jobs back to the site.

Plaid Cymru MS Sian Gwenllian said: “It is disheartening to see that no way forward could be found to keep the factory open, and to keep local jobs in Dyffryn Nantlle.

“My thoughts are with the workers and their families. The way they were treated was unfair.

“Looking ahead to the future, I hope to see the factory once again offering local employment.”
