Former Labor minister Graham Richardson says the government has been missing “for years” on the issue of the threat China poses in the Pacific.
This comes amid China’s growing influence in the region.
“I think it snuck up on us … obviously intelligence here just didn’t pick it,” Mr Richardson told Sky News host Chris Smith.
“There’s been no attempt to fix it because we didn’t know there was a problem. A terrible intelligence failure.”
